Maintenance is just as important as innovation -though less glamorous; GE sells its Intelligent Platforms unit; Combine IoT with geospatial analytics to get better results; EV charging is a new big asset class for services; Sentinel Energy Services buys Strike to create largest pure- play services provider for pipelines; Drone inspection services on the rise; Tetrapak, Siemens and Bentley Systems announce new service offerings using technology; Singapore Port invests heavily in digitization and 3D Printing; Robot installations growing at almost disruptive rates; Virtual Power Networks by Siemens; Rolls Royce is developing autonomous vessel technology; and India is building up its own steelmaking equipment industry.
Maintenance: It lacks the glamour of innovation and it’s harder to measure – but it’s just as important
Shedding assets: Emerson Electric is buying GE’s Intelligent Platforms business
IoT: On its own, sensor data is one dimensional. IoT data when combined with geospatial analytics, business data, and operational data, the data reveals hidden patterns and relationships for more effective outcomes.

Industrial robots: Sales of robots increased by 30% in 2017 driven by Europe and Asia. Over 380,000 robots were sold last year, almost 138,000 of those to China according to the International federation of Robotics.
The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) has published its annual report on the state of the industrial robotics market worldwide. It finds that 2017 sales of industrial robots increased by 30 percent year on year to 381,335 units, the fifth year of record growth. The main drivers of this growth were the metal industry (with 55 percent higher demand than in 2016) and the electronics sector (32 percent).
Energy Services: Siemens and the University of Oxford to explore creating a “Virtual Power Network” to link distributed sites and manage power centrally to improve energy efficiency
Engineers from Siemens and the University of Oxford are to jointly explore the potential of creating a virtual power network to centrally manage the energy across the university’s multiple locations. The Innovate UK funded feasibility study will focus on the University of Oxford estate which consumes about £1m of energy each month. Unlike some universities, […]

Drones services: Drones and software provides an easier path for power line safety inspections -through a platform by Avitas Systems, a Boston-based GE venture launched in 2017 that applies robotics, artificial intelligence and risk-based predictive analytics to industrial inspections.
In 2003, Mother Nature turned off the lights on the East Coast. The reason: a short circuit caused on a hot summer day by a chance encounter between an overgrown tree branch and a sagging power line. The problem quickly cascaded through the system, triggering the biggest blackout in North American history. [...] This is an abstract of the document.
